Tantalum hunting with a Thermal Imaging Camera
Tantalum is never fun to deal with because when it shorts and DOESN'T explode you end up with a whole bunch of them running parallel in the same circuit. With the ever dropping price of thermal imaging cameras however using only a current limiting bench supply we can easily isolate the problem capacitor. Let me show you how using this hard drive from an IBM 5150.

All about Timing - Correcting and Adjusting your 258's Spark Advance.

We trust a mechanic to know what they are doing. After all, they went to school for this. Sometimes mistakes are made and they are hard to notice. In this video I discover that a previous (and poorly done) engine installation had the engine broken in and run (part of this is my fault for reasons I explain in he video and I won't deny that) with a mere 5 degrees of spark timing BTDC. The Type 6 keyboard was absolute garbage.. to the point that people left it in the pack and bought adapters for the Type 5 to USB instead. The weak rubber dome keys make extensive typing feel like digging in warm mud. I never had a worse keyboard ever, especially not from a premium vendor. Thankfully, Sun noticed the many complaints and released the Type 7 a few years later, which was more or less a Type 5 with USB controller inside. Also, I'm quite sad that Sun stopped making desktop machines after the Ultra 45.. the T2 CPUs would have been great in developer machines with their many cores.

    My Jobo CPP2 was purchased in 1988 and last week the agitator motor stopped working. Upon inspection I found the T 1.25 A fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse but the motor still did not work. The problem was a bad rectifier which was replaced with a $14 USD rectifier. Running smoothly now. The only other problem happened in the late 1990s when I had to replace the water pump impeller shaft that corroded into two pieces. For processing the reservoir is filled with pre-heated water so the CPP2 heater only has to maintain the correct water temperature during processing. My darkroom is controlled to a 15-20% humidity and an ambient temperature between 68 to 75 F year round.

    So did it drive better??

    • @CelGenStudios
      @CelGenStudios Місяць тому

      Yes and no. Yes in that I could accelerate and get up to highway speeds far faster than previously and it was considerably more responsive taking off at a light or stop sign, HOWEVER it became considerably harder to maintain a stable curb idle on a hot soaked engine. Occasionally it would simply stumble and stall. I didn't mention this in the video as there's some instructions that through the Internet are inconsistently described and I have not fully tested enough to be confident talking about in a video, so follow the suggestion below with caution. Two things that you need to factor into timing adjustments, prior to adjusting your idles: -On an average day/week/month/year of driving the car, How many thousands of feet are you above sea level? Your timing will change by half a degree for every 1000 feet. Eventually for AMC/Jeeps you exceed 5000 feet and there is a physical jumper and alternate timing spec you need to pay attention to. Modern vehicles can compensate for altitude using the MAP/MAF Sensor. -Do you use Ethanol blended (Regular) gas? Ethanol blends like to more readily vapor lock and less readily ignite (at lower cylinder compression) than gas did 40 years ago. That will also affect your timing by a degree or two. After this video the vehicle was test driven and the above symptoms were noted. The timing was dialed back to 12.5 degrees BTDC which resulted in an engine that both accelerated good (this isn't a racecar, so 0 to 60 in 15 seconds is already "better than average" for an Eagle) and could handle a curb idle.

    • @CelGenStudios
      @CelGenStudios 29 днів тому

      In '82 the distributor reluctor goes straight to the Duraspark and then out again as the TACH signal for the computer, the optional tachometer and the negative post on the ignition coil. Starting in 1983 they added a knock sensor and upgraded the computer to handle it, but now the reluctor goes straight to the computer, the computer can then directly retard spark timing by itself and then goes to the Duraspark module which then gives you the TACH signal for the optional tachometer and the negative post on the ignition coil. In both cases the TACH signal will be a dark green wire. If the computer detects an erratic or low RPM (and it can only do so using the distributor reluctor) it will use the SOL-VAC to try and kick up the idle using the Idle Speed Relay. It, the AC, the defrosters and the headlights all pass through mentioned set of diodes to prevent backfeeding but any one of those being turned on should get you battery voltage exiting the diode module.

  • @olik136
    @olik136 Місяць тому

    that is way more complicated than I would have thought. My 60s Volvo has no vacuum stuff at all- all you do is turn the distributor until the engine runs best (which is very easy to hear) and that is it. You can check the markings with a light gun- but it won't get you any closer.

    Having any part of setting the timing involve putting the car in drive and opening the throttle is just feral. I guess the wear on the transmission is minimal given that this happens for a fraction of its life, but everything about putting load on the torque converter while not moving hurts. I guess that's the point for setting the idle though? 🫠

    • @compu85
      @compu85 Місяць тому

      That doesn't wear the transmission at all. If you raise the rpm first then slam into gear that's bad, but going into gear first then raising rpm just warms the fluid some.

      @@CelGenStudios Thanks. I did a lot of thinking on the project. While checking out at the grocery store I noticed lots of balloons. What are most of those made from? MYLAR !! At least those are available everywhere. I got mine for free from that grocery store because it had a hole in it ;) Then I went looking up and down the isles around my local Home Depot (in CA) for similar foam padding. I found Frost King Camper Mounting Tape for Trucks 1-1/4 x 3/16 self stick vinyl foam, about $7usd. Then I walked past the tape section and saw 2" double sided carpet tape, about $9usd. I went home and made a sandwich of a cut up mylar balloon.( I used masking tape to stretch and hold the shiny side down mylar on a flat surface), then put the sticky side of foam to the painted/colored side of the mylar, then applied the sticky side of the 2-sided tape to the foam, leaving the paper still on the back sided of the tape face up. Then proceed as you do in cutting up the slices, and then punching holes. I got an 11mm punch like yours from aliexpress for about $2usd. I would suggest using somewhat fresh and smooth surface wood to punch holes on. Old wood splinters too much. I tested these in a Compaq Portable KB and they work perfectly!! Oh, be sure to peal off the tape backing from the pads before you put these into the keyboard. I thought I'd share first my frustration, sorry, then my solution so others could benefit.

Another vendor, HBOC (which later merged with McKesson) offered a more self-contained hospital system for the Four-Phase. At a previous employer I worked with a programmer who used to work for HBOC on that system. He spoke of being offered a decommissioned Four-Phase (which he unfortunately turned down).
